It's All About The Oil

Today was science day with the girls. We experimented with oil and water, and learned why they don't mix. We put baby oil and water in a jar and shook it, then watched them separate again.

We added a few drops of food coloring, watched it sink down through the oil, sit on top of the water, and drift down through the water.

We shook the jar and watched the water and oil and coloring separate again.

Pretty interesting stuff- we shook it again and again.

We tried it again, this time using vegetable oil and water.

That worked even better. Vegetable oil's consistency made everything more dramatic.

Eew! Blood! Or.... maybe food coloring.

To this jar of oil, water, and food coloring, we added an Alka Seltzer tablet.

 The result was very interesting

and mesmerizing.

We learned what "effervescence" means. Here's Hailey, demonstrating effervescence.

After our little experiments, we were so hungry we had to made Hailey and Makayla's favorite thing to make with Grandma-pretzels.

Painting them with water and baking soda is almost as fun as eating them.

Meanwhile, since RA people are SUPPOSE to eat lots of Omega-3 fish, I cooked salmon with dill pistachio pistou for Stan and me.  I could have used that experiment oil, but the doctor recommends olive oil. Does anyone need some slightly used vegetable oil? Anyone? Anyone?
